GeraLearn in United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, GeraLearn offers a marketplace of self-paced courses, live cohorts, and 1-to-1 tutoring across coding, languages, accounting, professional CPD, and exam prep (GCSE, A-Level, university entrance, ACCA, CFA, AAT). Payment is in GBP via Stripe UK. CPD certificates issued by individual instructors are not automatically accredited by a UK awarding body unless the provider holds that accreditation directly; learners should verify accreditation claims on the listing before purchase. Consumer-rights protection applies under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for digital content.

Country FAQ

Are GeraLearn courses CPD-accredited in the UK?

CPD accreditation depends on the individual instructor or course, not GeraLearn as a platform. Each course listing must state which UK CPD body (CPD UK, CPD Standards Office, CPD Certification Service, or a sector-specific body such as the SRA, GPhC, GMC, or ICAEW) has accredited it. If the listing does not state an accrediting body, the CPD certificate is informal evidence of learning only and may not count toward formal CPD requirements. Verify accreditation directly with the body before purchase if employer reimbursement depends on it.

What consumer-rights protection do UK learners have on digital courses?

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, digital content (including online courses) must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. If a course materially misrepresents its content, accreditation, or instructor credentials, you have the right to a repair, replacement, or refund. The standard 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 applies unless you have expressly consented to immediate access and acknowledged that this waives the cancellation right; many GeraLearn courses are structured with a free preview to satisfy this.

Does GeraLearn report income to HMRC for UK-based instructors?

GeraLearn is an in-scope digital platform under the OECD Model Reporting Rules transposed into UK law via the Platform Operators (Due Diligence and Reporting Requirements) Regulations 2023, effective for the 2024 reporting year onward. Income paid out to UK-based instructors is reported annually to HMRC and shared with the seller. Instructors should retain their own records, register as self-employed where required, and report earnings on their Self Assessment return.

Are courses accessible to learners with disabilities?

GeraLearn requires instructors to follow accessibility standards in line with WCAG 2.1 AA where reasonable, and the Equality Act 2010 prohibits less-favourable treatment of disabled learners. Specific accessibility features (captions, transcripts, screen-reader-friendly slides, alt text on diagrams) are listed on each course page; learners can filter for courses meeting their access needs. Report missing accommodations via the in-app accessibility report flow.

How are under-18 learners protected?

Accounts for learners under 18 must be opened by a parent or legal guardian, who remains the contracting party with GeraLearn. We follow the ICO Age Appropriate Design Code: no behavioural advertising to under-18s, profile defaults to high-privacy, and learning data is processed on the lawful basis of parental consent. Live tutoring sessions with a minor require the parent to be reachable on the registered contact details; tutors are vetted with self-declaration plus identity verification, but GeraLearn does not perform DBS checks and parents should not treat a tutor as a regulated childcare provider.

Can I claim a refund if the live tutor cancels or no-shows?

Yes. If a paid live session is cancelled or missed by the tutor, GeraLearn automatically credits the session and offers either a free rebook or a full GBP refund to the original payment method via Stripe UK. Repeated cancellations by a tutor lead to listing suspension. If your payment method does not allow refund (e.g. an expired card), refund is paid as account credit usable across the GeraLearn marketplace.

What VAT treatment applies to UK course purchases?

For B2C purchases (consumers paying personally), prices on the course page are inclusive of UK VAT where applicable. Instructors operating below the VAT threshold do not charge VAT, and prices reflect that. For B2B purchases (paid by a VAT-registered business), instructors who are VAT-registered issue a UK VAT invoice; instructors below the threshold do not. The invoice from GeraLearn or the instructor will show the VAT treatment that applies to each purchase.

Is my course data and progress backed up if an instructor leaves the platform?

Course access and your progress, certificates, and downloads are retained in your GeraLearn account for at least 24 months after instructor departure or course removal, per our Terms. We do not retain video lectures forever if the instructor revokes the licence; in that case, you receive notice and (where the course was purchased within the prior 12 months) a pro-rata refund. Export your certificates and notes from the account dashboard at any time.
