UK School Directory — FAQ

How many schools in England are rated Outstanding by Ofsted?
572 of the 872 state-funded schools in GeraLearn's directory are rated Outstanding by Ofsted (as of 31 May 2026). England has approximately 20,000 state-funded schools in total, so Outstanding schools represent a small fraction of the national picture. Each profile page shows the inspection date and a link to the full Ofsted report.
Which schools are included in this directory?
The directory covers 872 schools: all 572 Outstanding state-funded secondary and primary schools in England, plus the 300 largest Good-rated secondary schools by pupil numbers. All have a published OEIF overall-effectiveness grade (Outstanding or Good) from Ofsted management information as at 31 May 2026. Schools inspected only under the new Education Inspection Framework since September 2024 — which no longer publishes an overall grade — are not included.
How often is school Ofsted data updated?
Ofsted publishes updated management information monthly (usually in the first week of each month). GeraLearn re-dates school profiles in lockstep with each Ofsted release, so grades and inspection dates here reflect the most recent monthly management information. The current data is as at 31 May 2026.
Why do some secondary schools show LA-level GCSE results instead of school results?
DfE school-level Key Stage 4 results (Attainment 8, Progress 8, percentage achieving grade 4+ in English and maths) are published on the Compare School Performance website and not available as a bulk open download. To avoid showing invented or estimated figures, GeraLearn shows LA-level averages from the DfE Key Stage 4 performance tables (academic year 2023/24) as context, with a direct link to the school's official performance data on the Compare Schools website.

How this directory was built — methodology

GeraLearn built this directory entirely from Ofsted's publicly available management information on state-funded school inspections and outcomes (as at 31 May 2026, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0).

  1. School selection: The full Ofsted management information CSV (>21,000 rows) was filtered to schools with a published OEIF overall-effectiveness grade (Outstanding = 1, Good = 2). No schools with an ungraded or suppressed grade are included.
  2. Coverage rule: All 272 Outstanding secondary schools in England are included. The 300 largest Outstanding primary schools by pupil count are included. The 300 largest Good secondary schools by pupil count are included. Total: 872 schools.
  3. No fabricated figures: Ofsted grades and inspection dates come verbatim from the published CSV. School-level KS4 results are not available as a bulk open download; LA-level KS4 context is cross-linked from DfE performance tables (Academic year 2023/24) rather than estimated.
  4. Re-dating: GeraLearn re-generates profiles monthly when Ofsted publishes its updated management information.
